The Eastwood Cycle Sanctuary is not just a spin class. It’s an experience.
Picture everything you’ve previously thought of a spin class – clinical white walls and the monotonous sound of European trance music.
This, I am pleased to say, is the complete opposite.
Eastwood Cycle Sanctuary has a reputation for being one of the best spin studios in Vancouver, and after my first visit it’s easy to see why!
How to describe the studio…imagine a beautiful Moroccan riad and an edgy east-side warehouse came together and had a love child. The result would be Eastwood Cycle Sanctuary.
The entrance to the studio is spacious and the welcome is warm and friendly. If you came with any pre-spin nerves you’d be put at ease very quickly.
Downstairs there is a beautifully decorated space to relax and recharge before and after your ride, which the studio encourages you to take full advantage of.
The studio is well equipped with showers, lockers, water, towels and every kind of toiletry you feel you could need (including the crucial post-spin dry shampoo). You can literally just turn up in your sweat pants!
The studio also provide you with cycling shoes which is included in the cost of your class.
The workout happens in a spacious room lit only by candle light. This I love because you can really focus on yourself without worrying about what’s going on around you, or whether you look silly!
Eastwood have two different types of ride: The Icon and The Athlete.
The Icon is an intense 45 minutes class which focuses on a high RPM ride whilst keeping in time with the beat of the music. This is a full body workout and weights are used in one of the tracks.
The Athlete focuses on strength and endurance and is similar in feel to road cycling. This class is anywhere between 45-60 minutes.
One of the best things about this studio is the clever device you have on your bike. The device shows you what gear you’re in as well as your RPM.
The instructor will tell you what RPM and gear you should be in for each track, which I have to say revolutionized my spin! It also shows you how many calories you’ve burned and how many KMs you’ve cycled.
Personally I tried The Icon and the class absolutely flew by. The workout was really tough but the instructor was inspiring and the vibe was buzzing.
Difficultly: The Icon class was one of the toughest Spin classes I’ve ever done but it was also one of the most fun. You leave the class feeling like you could take on the world. If you’re a beginner don’t let the difficulty put you off. The instructors are amazing at making you feel comfortable and you can 100% take it at your own pace.
Calories burned: 450 calories burned in 45 minutes.
Price: $10 for your first class. The drop in rate is $25.
Location: Gas Town and North Vancouver.
Booking: Click here to register and book your class directly on the Eastwood cycle website
Tip: Have an Eastern themed evening and make the short 2 minute walk over to Lebanese restaurant Nuba, one of my favorite healthy eats in Vancouver. I highly recommend booking a table as it gets very busy!
